absolutelawncarela-blog there are three important elements to keeping a plant healthy: sun, water, and soil conditions. of these sun (what type and how much) and water are most important, and with summer coming on and the heat cranking up, those plants are not going to water themselves. water is essential to the survival of your landscape, and each plant has its own specific watering needs (these same things apply to sod). the internet is a great resource, and we suggest you research the needs of your plants. there will be times of the year when watering will be required on a daily basis, and other times when the need will not be as great. the easiest way to see if your plants are getting enough water is to check the soil. stick a couple fingers in the dirt, and if it’s dry, water. a good place to start would be about three times a week, but this isn’t a foolproof schedule, so check the soil. as a general rule it is best to water early in the morning. plants absorb water better when they are not stressed by heat. early watering also gives the landscape plenty of time to dry off, which helps prevent fungus growth. and if you’re like most people and the idea of watering turns your stomach, we can help you out with an irrigation system. 1 note dec 24th, 2017 open in app facebook tweet reddit mail embed permalink absolutelawncarela-blog hurricane preparedness absolutelawncarela-blog hurricane season is on us. like they do every year, they’re saying that it’s going to be a bad season, and there’s already some tropical activity out in the atlantic. it’d be best if we didn’t get anything at all, but it’s always good to be prepared. have a go-bag ready and keep the car filled with gas so that if you need to you can leave fast and beat the traffic. if you decide to stay, have bottled water, preserved foods, candles, and flashlights with extra batteries. it might be a good idea to take a look at the national weather service’s website so you know where to start. keep in mind that a lot of damage in hurricanes comes from wind. take a look at the trees around your house. are they a little close already? are there some weak or dead limbs? we have a licensed aborist and an experienced tree climber on staff. tree cutting is serious, dangerous business, and we’re fully insured. that’s important. we can take care of those trees for you in preparation for a hurricane, and we’ll be here the second the storm is over. 2 notes dec 24th, 2017 open in app facebook tweet reddit mail embed permalink absolutelawncarela-blog easy irrigation absolutelawncarela-blog watering plants can be a chore, but not watering them, especially this time of year, can mean that they’ll get burnt alive by the sun. a professionally installed irrigation system can take out a lot of the guesswork. our standard installation includes the hunter solar-sync module. this module makes watering about as hands off as it can possibly be. the built-in rain-clik sensor will make sure the system isn’t on while mother nature is doing the watering for you, while the solar-sync will monitor the temperature and adjust your watering schedule to account for the evapotranspiration factor. evapotranspiration is a plant’s loss of water caused by local weather conditions, especially temperature. so with the solar-sync installed, when there’s a cool day and the evapotranspiration factor is low, your irrigation system will automatically adjust to deliver less water. beyond being just clever, the solar-sync module will make your irrigation system more conservative and in doing so, make sure that your water bill will be as low as it can be while the plants stay happy, perky and watered. 1 note dec 24th, 2017 open in app facebook tweet reddit mail embed permalink absolutelawncarela-blog just because it’s cold doesn’t mean you don’t have to water absolutelawncarela-blog yup. every plant in your yard, even the ones you think are dead (i.e. herbaceous perennials, tropicals whose foliage have died) still need water in the winter. even your grass needs water regardless of whether or not it’s brown. good news, though. nothing needs a whole killing lot of water right now. it’s been cool, even though this week has felt nothing like winter, and we have had some rain. overall though, many yards and gardens around town could stand a good watering. here’s what you do. put your fingers in the dirt. check the grass in a few places, check the beds in a few places–especially near anything that was recently planted. if it feels dry to the touch, drag out the hose. if it’s moist, leave it alone. this is the year-round procedure for checking your plants. it’s terribly easy and will save you $$$ because you won’t over-water, which jacks up the monthly bills, or under-water and kill your shrubs. 1 note dec 24th, 2017 open in app facebook tweet reddit mail embed permalink absolutelawncarela-blog my new garden absolutelawncarela-blog i just moved to mid-city. it’s the first time in awhile that i have any kind of yard. the front is the only place i can really garden. there’s a large hackberry tree in the corner. my plan is to start around it and work down my neighbor’s picket fence toward the street. it won’t be a huge bed, but i’m anxious to get to it. it’s been too long since i got to do garden work for myself. my house, my neighbor, and several trees along the street make this a shady spot that recieves just a bit of early morning light and filtered mid-morning light. an oak tree next door is dropping mucho leaves, and they will be my mulch. i have a rangy looking schefflera and a birds nest fern that have been house plants for most their lives. i’ve put them in the bed still in their pots, and they’re already loving the fresh air and humidity. i’ll likely use a few flax lilies from the office to add some white to the bed, as well as texture. after that, i’ll be looking toward annuals and perennials to add color. i don’t want to spend a ton on shrubs since i’m renting. a few variegated hostas maybe, coleus, begonias, and assorted ferns. can’t wait to get a start. i’m thinking next weekend if the weather is nice. i’ll make sure and upoad some pictures to show the progress. 1 note dec 24th, 2017 open in app facebook tweet reddit mail embed permalink absolutelawncarela-blog poolscape before & after installation of an irrigation system, new garden beds, and hanging baskets planted with seasonal color. horticulturist, reid stribling chose a combination of colorful and fragrant plants in red, purple, and green. he used japanese maple to add height, and sweet olive and jasmine to fill the garden with a sweet scent. garden beds filled with azalea, loropetalum, agapanthus, katrina iris, and a
